What drew you to this type of work?
I was drawn to the psychiatric-mental health field because I’m genuinely curious about people—their inner worlds, their patterns, and the way these experiences shape how they move through life. Mental health work exists at the intersection of science and humanity, and I love that balance. There’s something powerful about helping someone feel more steady, more understood, or a little less alone in their own thoughts.
How do you work with present day concerns and their deeper origins?
I approach care by staying grounded in the client’s present-day needs while remaining curious about how those concerns developed over time. My priority is to first help stabilize what is most pressing—symptoms, safety, and functioning—so the client feels supported and able to engage.
Often the present concern didn’t arise out of nowhere, and clients are the best teachers in helping me understand how their past experiences, relationships, or coping strategies shaped where they are today. As trust builds, we gently connect those dots together–holding both the “now” and the “then” allows the work to feel practical, meaningful, and—most importantly—human.
What do you value most about the therapeutic relationship?
I value the quiet moments as much as the breakthroughs: the pauses, the reflections, the gradual softening that happens when understanding replaces fear. In that kind of relationship, insight grows organically, resilience strengthens, and healing becomes less about fixing and more about reconnecting—with oneself, and with the possibility of change.
How do you hope clients feel after working with you over time?
I hope my clients leave with a deeper awareness that life is not about perfect answers, but about how we move through the questions, the chaos, and the moments of beauty that arise unexpectedly. Ideally, they carry a sense of self-compassion and resilience, knowing that even in the face of uncertainty, they are capable of growth, choice, and meaningful connection with themselves and the world around them.
“Jessica Susan DNP APN is absolutely amazing. By far the most compassionate and knowledgeable DNP. Her education in the Psychiatric field is well established. I would leave 10 stars but i can only leave 5. She always goes the extra mile in returning calls, getting the correct medication ordered, and always very professional.”
