What drew you to this type of work?
I wanted to give back out into the world the kind of support, compassion, and help I received growing up from many people around me, including my family, teachers, coaches, and mentors. I wanted to be able to be that kind of support and safe space for anyone who needed that throughout a part of their life.
What do you value most in the therapeutic relationship?
Developing a deep relationship over time and building rapport with someone, learning their history, and cultivating a sense of intimacy that makes for a healing therapeutic process with trust, non judgment, and unconditional positive regard.
How does your training shape the way you approach therapy?
I rely a lot on my “athletic” training that has shaped the way I approach therapy and life in general. I was a Division I athlete for 5 years and am a competitive runner to this day. I have learned many lessons in my athletic and running career that translate over into life, as well as being a therapist. Similarly, I try to find my clients’ passions and interests and make connections in the work we are doing with what they love.
How do you work with both the present day concern and its deeper origins?
By understanding our upbringing, our history, our past traumas, it can help inform what behaviors, patterns, and narratives we still hold today and why. A balance of what is currently taking place, alongside an understanding of the origin of these things can help create an understanding to let go of unproductive habits, behaviors, and help us evolve by extracting that wisdom from our past and how it comes up for us now.
How do you hope clients feel after working with you over time?
I want clients to develop a greater sense of self-trust within themselves. I want my clients to have compassion towards themselves, the way that most of my clients extend that out to others but oftentimes forget to be kind and gracious towards themselves. I hope my clients learn to cultivate a deeper purpose in their own lives in a way that feels meaningful and fulfilling. I want my clients to have the courage to show up as their authentic selves.
