Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a powerful, mindfulness-focused therapy that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional and physical pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting works deep within the subcortical brain to promote healing and integration of traumatic memories. Clients often express relief of their symptoms after one or two sessions. 
A typical brainspotting session involves the client identifying the issue of concern, noticing where she feels this in her body and then with the therapist’s help, finding the brainspot that connects with this felt sense. The therapist uses a pointer across the client’s field of vision to identify the relevant brainspot which connects with the location of where traumatic memories are stored deep in the brain.  
   
When a brainspot is stimulated, the deep brain reflexively signals the therapist and often the client that an area of significance has been located. Once the brainspot is located, the client begins mindful processing of the experience. Often but not always, the body responds to the processing in a variety of reflexive ways.   
  
The maintenance of that eye position/brainspot within the attentional focus on the body’s “felt sense” of that issue or trauma stimulates a deep integrating and healing process within the brain. This processing, which appears to take place at a reflexive or cellular level within the nervous system, brings about a de-conditioning of previously conditioned, maladaptive emotional and physiological responses. Brainspotting appears to stimulate, focus, and activate the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself from trauma.
